By Waldo Ansaldi

As Milene Fernández Pintado (1999) recounts wistfully in her short story “El día que no fui a Nueva York,” the authors thus became tourists themselves. Intercultural encounters that privileged difference were replayed in many areas of Cuban society, particularly in cultural exports such as music and film, but the encounter repeatedly depicted in fictional portrayals of the 1990s is both the most intensely physical and the most heavily publicized. It is the encounter between a Cuban woman and a foreign man, approximated to the discourse of prostitution through the figure of the jinetera.

The Boom of the 1960s, too, was propelled by a rapidly expanding market for Latin American fiction beyond the places in which it was written; a market incited, as Angel Rama (1981) commented, by widespread fascination at the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. And yet it is this factor in the success of the first Boom—its coincidence with the rise of the young Fidel Castro— that most distinguishes it from the “new Cuban boom” of the 1990s; for while the 1960s Boom coincides with the Revolution’s ascension, Cuba’s “new boom” was bolstered by representations of socialism’s demise.

This relationship provides a structural model for the tourist encounter that is replicated in the imagined encounter between Cuban fiction and its readers outside the country. Foreign readers in the 1990s, whether or not they had visited Cuba, came to share tourists’ interests in what the country had to reveal of its purportedly authentic culture; as did the literary agents and publishers who flocked to Havana’s annual book fair in search of new material to take home. Reciprocally, Cuban authors who published abroad were increasingly invited to travel to launch their books—including to the United States, whose Clinton-era policy permitted cultural exchange.
